Mrs. Elisa Augusta da Conceição Andrade, who concluded this year her course at the Lisbon Medical School, opened a practice office for women and children. There it is, at last, the first and big step towards the emancipation of women in Portugal! In a little while, perhaps a year from now, two new female doctors, trained at the Oporto Medical School, will join her, and their example will be followed and others will succeed her until the “femme savant” (educated woman) enters our customs as the “ménagère” (housewife) has done up to now. Leave behind the lace cap and the chintz apron, leave behind knitting and the ivory needle, leave behind the “pot-au-feu”(cooking)! Honour to science! Glory to the scalpel!

The Portuguese Association for Hospital Development (APDH) joins the commemorations of the International Women's Day (IWD), held annually on March 8, with the aim of “celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and simultaneously calling to action for accelerating gender parity”.

To mark this special day, APDH retrieved the words of some of the Women honoured in the APDH’s publication40 Unique Years, 40 Remarkable Women” (“40 Anos Ímpares, 40 Mulheres Notáveis”). This publication was presented at the Conference “NHS – Women’s Role” (“SNS no Feminino”) in 2019, event that hosted Portuguese women – managers and leaders in the health sector, who pointed out what distinguishes them and how they achieved their success.

Throughout the day, the messages of these Women will be shared on social networks and in a newsletter totally dedicated to the theme, hoping that their extraordinary contribution to the Portuguese National Health Service (NHS) may inspire and encourage young Women to follow a path of Excellence in Health, as well as raise awareness against discrimination and promote gender equality.

This initiative is also disseminated on the International Hospital Federation’s (IHF) blog, dedicated to IWD’s celebration, which will feature the activities promoted by its members (including APDH), worldwide, to mark the day. The IHF will also promote the sharing of key messages from leaders in healthcare on its communication channels, using the hashtag #ChooseToChallenge, initiatives that the APDH is very pleased to welcome and associate itself with.

I was 4 years old when the National Health Service (NHS) was created and I have been working there for almost 20 years. My life has crossed many women's lives; these women from whom I have learned and with whom I am proud to work with ... They are my ‘SNS no Feminino’ (The title of APDH’s Conference, dedicated to Women’s Role in NHS).
Marta Temido, Hospital Administrator, Health Minister

Women’s problematic led me to choose Gynaecology and Obstetrics. I realised that this was the area in which I could best help women, who were at disadvantage in society. They were diminished, reduced. Therefore, for me, it was a question of defending them, a being that is socially more vulnerable. (...) Women's rights have always been a field I have been very passionate about.
Purificação Araújo, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Maternal Health Consultant
